More information: Edward Payne outlined the beginning of his interest in archaeology, along with his own idiosyncratic views of the spread of humanity, in a monograph, The Immortal Stone Age, that was published posthumously in The book also includes a number of photographs of items from his collection. A very tough read, due to Payne's indirect, repetitive writing style, but the content was valuable. It is considered a classic for the landscape painter. I am glad I have it for my reference shelf. The composition diagrams are the most valuable aspect of the book, in my opinion. Another note: The book is filled with typos. Very annoying/5. Edward W. Payne Stone Age Collection - Photographs of Interesting and Outstanding Specimens of Indian Relics Reprint from Hart Publishers in Preface by Gordon L Hart Edward Payne () accumulated on of the greatest prehistoric collections ever assembled. Edward Payne was a businessman who never dabbled in politics, despite working in the Old State House, the hub of Massachusetts politics. Despite his political indifference, he was injured at the Boston Massacre as he watched the events out of the door of his home on King Street; a reminder that even those who wanted to stand back and watch were still swept up in the American Revolution.
